Tall Fescue Seed
Tall fescue is a durable, cool-season grass that performs exceptionally well in the Reading, PA climate. Known for its deep root system, it offers excellent drought tolerance and stays greener longer through hot summers and cold winters. Tall fescue holds up well to foot traffic, adapts to a variety of soil conditions, and performs in both full sun and partial shade. With proper care, it provides a thick, attractive lawn that requires less water than many traditional grass types, making it a reliable and low-maintenance choice for Pennsylvania properties.
Best Time to Plant
Tall fescue performs best when planted in early fall (late August–October) or early spring when soil temperatures are cool and consistent.Soil Preparation
Remove debris and loosen the top 1–2 inches of soil. For best results, rake the area smooth and ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Lightly amend with topsoil if needed.Seeding
Spread seed evenly using a hand spreader or broadcast by hand. Lightly rake the seed into the soil and gently press it down—do not bury the seed too deeply.Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist, not soaked. Water lightly 1–2 times per day until germination occurs (typically 7–14 days). Once established, gradually reduce watering frequency and increase depth.Germination & Growth
Tall fescue will begin to sprout within 7–14 days under proper conditions. Avoid foot traffic during establishment.Mowing
Begin mowing when grass reaches 3–4 inches tall. Never remove more than one-third of the blade height at a time.
