Callicarpa japonica ‘Issai’ (Issai Beautyberry) is a compact, deciduous ornamental shrub grown primarily for its striking fall fruit display. It has an upright to gently arching growth habit with slender stems and fresh green, oval leaves that create a soft, airy texture through spring and summer. In late summer, small pink flowers appear along the stems, followed by dense clusters of vivid metallic purple berries that wrap tightly around the branches and persist into fall, often after the leaves drop. ‘Issai’ is especially valued because it is self-fruitful, meaning a single plant can produce abundant berries without a pollinator.
